Cleaning begins on our coast

A total of 23 boats will clean up from Monday the Balearic beaches, As announced by the Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Territory, Biel Company, in the Port d’Andratx, which has detailed that this year the initiative begins one month before in 2012 and will last until mid-September. Thus, the service of the Balearic Agency of Water and Environmental Quality (Abaqua) will distribute the boats in this way: nine in Mallorca, six in Menorca, six in Ibiza and two in Formentera.

The main purpose of this action is the collection of floating solid waste in the vicinity of beaches and coves, to improve the appearance of the coast closer to the thousands of residents and tourists visiting the Balearic Islands.

The Government has awarded this service for an amount of 434,576 euros (without VAT) and will be developed in Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera by Melchor Mascaró and in Menorca for the Promotion of Constructions and Contracts.

It should be noted that last summer this service collected 26.4 tons of waste between Mallorca (12 tons), Menorca (8.3 tons), Ibiza (4.8 tons) and Formentera (1.3 tons).

The largest amount of waste extracted (40.71%) was plastics, specifically 10.7 tons, and also 7.4 tons of wood and by-products (28.01%), 2.8 tons of algae (10 tons) were collected. 66%) and 3.8 tons of other waste (14.64%).
